Some cities have a good year. Philadelphia is having a landmark one. The nation’s 250th birthday, the FIFA World Cup, world-class exhibitions, and one of the most spirited fall cultural calendars in recent memory have all converged on a city that was already worth visiting.
\n\n\n\nThis season, there’s something here for every kind of traveler, and more than enough reason to stay a little longer than planned.
\n\n\n\nThe biggest soccer tournament on Earth lands in Philadelphia this summer, and the energy is bound to be electric. Philly is hosting six matches at Lincoln Financial Field, with games running through July 4 which happens to fall on the nation’s 250th birthday. Even after the Philly matchups wrap, the FIFA Fan Festival at Lemon Hill in Fairmount Park runs for the full 39-day tournament.
\n\n\n\nThe city has gone all-in on the 250th, and several of the best experiences are still running well into the fall.
\n\n\n\nSpirit of 76: The Philadelphia Cocktail Trail (through September 30): More than 30 hotels and bars across the city are participating in this citywide cocktail trail tied to the Semiquincentennial. At Lacroix, we have two specialty drinks to celebrate: The Philly Fish House Punch, a modern take on the 1732 classic, and The Feint Punch, a zero-proof variation.
\n\n\n\n52 Weeks of Firsts (free, Saturdays 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.): Produced by the Philadelphia Historic District 250th Committee, this yearlong series of free public events spotlights Philadelphia-born “firsts” — some famous, some surprising even to lifelong locals. Through the fall, Firstival events pop up at iconic sites across the city: the world’s first selfie at Franklin Square, the Slinky’s debut at the American Philosophical Society, the signing of the Constitution at the National Constitution Center, and a fitting Halloween finale at the Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site celebrating the first modern detective story. \n\n\n\nThe Declaration’s Journey (through January 3, 2027): Featuring over 120 historic objects, documents, and artworks, this exhibition traces the history and global legacy of the Declaration of Independence from 1776 to today. There might be plenty of time to catch it, but it’s still definitely worth prioritizing.
\n\n\n\nA Nation of Artists: A major cultural exhibition split across two venues: the Philadelphia Museum of Art (through July 5, 2027) and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (through September 5, 2027). If PAFA is on your list, don’t hesitate as it only runs until early fall.
\n\n\n\nFirst Bank of the United States (reopened July 1, 2026): Closed since the Bicentennial in 1976, this beautifully restored building is finally open to the public again. The interior has been reimagined to tell the story of Alexander Hamilton’s vision for a centralized banking system and what it meant for the new nation. Well worth a stop if you’re spending time in the Historic District.
\n\n\n\nHistoric Germantown’s 26 Weeks of Walking Tours (through November 2026): The Historic Germantown consortium of 18 sites is running guided walking tours through the fall, covering Colonial-era history, Underground Railroad stories, and historic architecture across 10 Germantown locations. Tour themes shift seasonally, so explore their site for current offerings.
\n\n\n\nOnce Upon a Nation Storytelling Benches (through summer): Look for costumed storytellers posted at benches throughout the Historic District, sharing short tales of Philadelphia’s hidden history. Free, casual, and a great way to fill a half-hour between sightseeing.
\n\n\n\nNeighborhood Jawnts Tour Series (May 29 – October 25, Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays): Free, insider-led tours hitting a different Philadelphia neighborhood each week including local restaurants, shops, parks, and landmarks. Tours run Fridays at 2 p.m. and Saturdays/Sundays at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
\n\n\n\nIllumination 250 Festival and Drone Show in Haverford Township (August 29, noon – 9 p.m.): Delaware County’s Semiquincentennial celebration wraps up with a choreographed drone show. Live music, food trucks, a craft village, and a kids’ zone fill the day before the finale. Free and open to the public.
\n\n\n\nUniversal Studios Theme Parks: The Exhibition at The Franklin Institute (through September 7): A world-premiere immersive experience bringing theme park magic to one of Philly’s most beloved institutions. If this is on your radar, late summer is your last chance as it closes September 7.
\n\n\n\nMinistry of Awe (MoA): Set inside a stunning 19th-century Frank Furness-designed bank building, this fully immersive experience is hard to categorize. Part museum, part theatrical performance, part adult playground, with you as the main character. This wholly original experience just opened this spring and has already become a go-to staple for culture enthusiasts.
\n\n\n\nPhiladelphia Chinese Lantern Festival at Franklin Square (June 5 – August 16): Thousands of handcrafted, illuminated lanterns featuring dragons, koi, florals, and mythical creatures fill Franklin Square each evening. This year’s edition includes soccer-themed designs in honor of the World Cup. Live performances, folk art, fountain shows, and international food make it a must-see experience.
\n\n\n\nPhiladelphia Fringe Festival (September 8 – 27): The annual month-long showcase of alternative, avant-garde, and cutting-edge performance spans theater, dance, film, and immersive installations across the city. More than 300 events and experiences at venues large and small; there’s always something worth stumbling into.
\n\n\n\nREEL October: Philadelphia Film Festival at 35 (October 1 – 31): The Philadelphia Film Festival turns 35 this year with a month of celebrations: an ongoing “Surprise!” series where you don’t know what’s screening until you show up, two weeks of classic films presented in 35mm (October 1–14), and the full festival with world, U.S., and Philadelphia premieres (October 15–25).
