Wanamaker Gingerbread Building: A Holiday Tribute
For many Philadelphians, the holidays simply wouldn’t feel the same without a pilgrimage to the historic Wanamaker Building, once the nation’s first department store and formerly the Macy’s Center City flagship. Recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, the building has long been a symbol of holiday magic and tradition. This year, that spirit inspired the Rittenhouse’s pastry team to craft an intricate gingerbread version of the landmark, a labor of love that took shape over months and was unveiled just in time for the festive season.

Hotel guests of The Rittenhouse will be welcomed at check-in with an Empress 1908 Winter Cranberry 75. A curated selection of festive garnishes such as cranberries, sugared rosemary sprigs, orange citrus peel will be available for guests to customize their drink. Available daily from December 1-31 from 4-7pm.

Celebrate the season with Teddy Bear Tea at the Mary Cassatt Tea Room, a cherished Rittenhouse tradition for guests of every age. As a harpist fills the room with classic Christmas carols, families indulge in seasonal savories, delicate pastries, and hand-blended teas, while younger guests enjoy rich hot chocolate with house-made marshmallows. The experience includes a holiday photo moment and story time beside the Christmas tree, with each child departing with a new teddy bear and a gift bag of handcrafted treats to remember the occasion.

As winter settles over the city and Rittenhouse Square glows beneath twinkling lights, Library Bar becomes a cozy haven, filling each Friday and Saturday from 9:30 PM to midnight with rich, warm sound—from soulful vocals to expressive piano, guitar, bass, and saxophone. This December’s lineup features performances by the Keith Chasin Duo, Sharon Sable Duo, Cecilia Ferneborg Duo, Aaron Parnell Brown Jazz Duo, Avi Wisnia, and both trio and solo sets from Vance Camisa, culminating in a festive New Year’s Eve with the Vance Camisa Jazz Quartet.
